PAVEMENT ANTS

PAVEMENT ANTS

What do pavement ants look like?

This ant has either dark brown or black coloring and is about 1/8 of an inch long. Worker ants are about half the size of the “swarmers” (flying ants).

Where do they live and what do they eat?
Pavement ants create homes under sidewalks, large rocks and building slabs, which is where they get their name! Pavement ants prefer sweet or greasy foods, but they aren’t too picky and will basically take anything they can get to eat. Their diet includes sugary substances, fruits, nectar, syrups, small seeds, and dead insects, but any kind of food dropped on the floor will gladly be gathered and stored in the nest.

Are pavement ants dangerous?
While this species can sting and bite, it will most likely remain more of an irritation than a threat to your health if you are bitten. If a bite or sting creates discomfort, try applying an ice pack. The only threat pavement ants are to humans is the chance of a home infestation, where they will certainly track down any greasy or sweet substances you have throughout your house.
